( Paris) Independent TV production company Pernel Media today announces it has been commissioned by French public broadcaster France 5, part of the France Télévisions Group, to produce a third series of hit docu-drama series ‘The Real War of Thrones: A History of Europe’.
Following a strong domestic ratings average of 1 million consolidated viewers per episode for the second season (6 x 60’), ‘The Real War of Thrones: A History of Europe’ will return on prime time on France 5 for a new 6 x 60’ series.
The new series will again recount the epic story of the rival dynasties that forged the history of modern Europe. Through lavishly realised drama reconstruction, the program brings to life the experiences of the characters directly involved; their motivations, their strategy, what they stood to win and what they risked losing.
At the dawn of the 17th century, rivalries are stronger than ever in Europe, which is plunged into the wars of religion and the upcoming Thirty Years’ War. This third series opens as Henri IV struggles to be recognised as King of France while in England, James Stuart of Scotland takes the thrones left by Elizabeth 1st after her death and makes an alliance with the Catholic Spain.
Henri’s fight against the Habsburgs’ hegemony is about to change the destiny of Europe forever but he is violently assassinated in 1610, and his son Louis XIII enters the complex game of European alliances. Louis XIII marries Anne of Austria – sister of Philippe IV, King of Spain – and wages war against the Habsburgs despite the attempts of Ferdinand II, the Habsburg emperor of the Holy Germanic Empire, to make peace. In the meantime Louis and his Chief Minister Cardinal Richelieu have to fight conspiracies on their own side. Louis’ reign foreshadows the arrival of Louis XIV to Europe in 1643.
France 5’s latest commission for ‘The Real War of Thrones: A History of Europe’ comes after a raft of international sales for the show including to Foxtel in Australia, Viasat World, ZDF in Germany, TV5 in Quebec and the commission of an English-language version of series host by Dan Jones for History UK.
‘The Real War of Thrones; A History of Europe’ was commissioned by Caroline Behar, Head of Factual International Coproductions and Acquisitions at France Télévisions, and Thierry Mino, Deputy Head of Factual International Coproductions and Acquisitions at France Télévisions. Executive Producer is Samuel Kissous for Pernel Media.
“We are delighted that France Télévisions has commissioned Pernel Media to produce another season of ‘The Real War of Thrones; A History of Europe’, which has garnered so much international and domestic attention of the last two seasons, including an English-language version for History UK. This new series further builds on our reputation for producing high-end factual series with great production value and global appeal,” said Samuel Kissous, President of Pernel Media.
