(Bristol) Leading UK independent production company Icon Films today announces a commission from UK broadcaster Channel 5 to produce two behind–the-scenes documentaries.
Icon Films will produce two 90-minute one-off documentaries – ‘Secrets of the Mega…Airline Food’ and ‘Secrets of the Mega…Landfill’ – for Channel 5 this year.
The programmes follow on from last year’s Icon Films productions ‘All You Can Eat: Secrets of the Mega… Buffet’ (1 x 60’) and ‘Totally Stuffed! Secrets of the Mega… Christmas Buffet’ (1 x 60’), which both gave an insight into the inner workings of one of the UK’s largest buffet restaurant chains, JRC Global Buffet.
‘Secrets of the Mega…Airline Food’ gives an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the UK’s largest supplier of airline food – Alpha LSG – at their food production centre near London’s Heathrow Airport.
The scale of the company’s operation is truly epic… nearly 300,000 meals a week are made at the site, 160 chefs making meals for 7 of the top 10 airlines out of Heathrow, around the clock. With a development kitchen run by Head of Culinary Kevin Love, a former right-hand man to globally renowned chef Heston Blumenthal, this is a fascinating world where the glamour of air travel meets the logistics of food production on an industrial scale.
Meanwhile in ‘Secrets of the Mega…Landfill’, Icon Films has secured access to one of the largest waste landfill sites in North America, which will take a close look at the fascinating industry that transports, processes, disposes and reuses our waste on a daily basis.
From gas extracted to be used for energy; waste food turned into compost and asphalt broken down and reused to make roads, this film will celebrate the running of each finely tuned operation on site, the people involved and the vast scale achieved. The doc will also give an insight into new innovation and cutting-edge technologies that help collect rubbish on time, separate it into recyclables and landfill items and make it into new products or safely dispose of the waste.
‘Secrets of the Mega…Airline Food’ and ‘Secrets of the Mega…Landfill’ were commissioned by Daniel Pearl, Channel 5 Commissioning Editor, Factual. Stephen McQuillan is Executive Producer on both shows for Icon Films.
Icon Films’ Creative Director Stephen McQuillan said: “We are excited to create more of the ‘Secrets of the Mega…’ documentaries with this double commission from Channel 5. It’s important for Icon Films to expand our UK business with these deeply researched specialist factual shows alongside the continued growth of our global content.”
